Almaty has a strong Russian-speaking environment — 91.9% of respondents in one study said the city provides a sufficient Russian-language environment. Russian is also officially used alongside Kazakh in government and local administration in Kazakhstan.

Kazakhstan is currently rated Level 1 — Exercise Normal Precautions by the U.S. Department of State, its lowest travel-advisory level.
